Wisdom tooth removal in Pfäffikon SZ
A removal may be necessary for various reasons.
The removal of wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth, also known as "third molars," are remnants from a time when humans had larger jaws. Wisdom teeth often become noticeable in late adolescence, and removal may be necessary for the following reasons:
Wisdom teeth may not fully erupt from the gum due to lack of space. This can result in recurring gum inflammation, known as "dentitio difficilis," leading to painful symptoms. One may quickly notice this through a bad taste or bad breath.
Additionally, deeply seated wisdom teeth may exert pressure on adjacent teeth. In the worst case, this can lead to dissolving the root of the neighboring tooth. This is known as "root resorption." Facial and jaw pain, tooth migration, and death of neighboring teeth are potential consequences.
What we can do:
Firstly, a thorough examination is always conducted. If we determine the need for removal, an orthopantomogram (OPG, panoramic X-ray) is usually taken. This allows us to create an accurate map of the wisdom tooth and sensitive facial nerves.
If there are anatomical peculiarities, we recommend three-dimensional imaging (CT, CBCT). In 3D, we have even more opportunities to illuminate each area precisely, allowing for surgery with increased safety.
Additional measures may also be beneficial. For anxious patients or those requiring support, we are happy to offer general anesthesia or twilight sedation. Feel free to approach us for further information.
Following the treatment, the wound is sutured, and an antibacterial strip is inserted. Cold packs can help to reduce swelling of the cheek and alleviate pain, which is typical after surgery. One week after the surgery, the stitches are removed, and a follow-up examination is conducted.
