Gum treatment

Timely intervention can often prevent dental and surrounding diseases to avoid tooth loss.

What is periodontitis?

Grüne Lupe

A condition of the so-called periodontium, the tissue in which the tooth is anchored, is usually recognizable early on by bleeding of the gums. Otherwise, deceptively, almost the entire course of the disease is painless. In the long term, this condition can become a serious problem, as progressive tooth loosening and inflammation eventually lead to tooth loss. Studies show that this constant bacterial burden has enormous effects on the health of the whole body. Periodontitis is therefore frequently associated with serious conditions such as heart disease, rheumatism, or diabetes.

How does periodontitis develop?

Grüner Doppelfpeil

Bacterial plaque around the teeth causes inflammation of the gums. The otherwise tight seal of the gums to the jawbone becomes permeable to bacteria. This is evident through a tendency to bleed, for example, when using dental floss or brushing teeth. Bacteria can now penetrate deeper along the tooth. As a result, the supporting bone around the tooth and the gums recede. The teeth appear "longer" and begin to loosen due to the lack of surrounding bone, eventually resulting in tooth loss.

Untreated periodontitis progresses slowly, leading to loosening and eventual loss of teeth.

STEP BY STEP

Treatment process

Over 60% of the adult population suffers from the dental disease "periodontitis," making it the second most common disease among humans. Unfortunately, this condition is still rarely detected and effectively treated in a timely manner even today.

01

Initial examination and dental hygiene

For the treatment, an extensive consultation is conducted where we examine the current condition of your teeth, gums, and jawbones. Following this, we plan the treatment together. Our experience and modern imaging allow for precise planning of periodontosis/periodontitis therapy. We use X-rays, photos, and dental impressions as a basis. In a separate dental hygiene session, we analyze areas of poor oral hygiene. Bacterial samples are sent to a specialized laboratory for DNA analysis to tailor the treatment to the causative bacteria and achieve a sustainable outcome.

02

Removal of hopeless teeth and provisional dental replacement

If some teeth are not viable for long-term preservation due to deep bacterial infection, we remove them at the beginning of the systematic periodontitis therapy. A provisional restoration, prepared as part of the previous planning, will be placed directly at this appointment, so that you will not notice the missing teeth outwardly. You will wear this provisional restoration until you receive your final dental replacement (crowns/bridges/implants).

03

Deep dental pocket treatment in one session

On the day of the treatment, you will receive medications determined after analysis to combat the causative bacteria with antibiotics. Subsequently, after careful anesthesia, each tooth is individually freed from bacterial deposits, known as calculus, extending from the gums to the depth of the root. Curettes and special ultrasonic techniques are used for this purpose. Following the concept of "Full Mouth Disinfection" (FMD) and treating all teeth in one session prevents bacteria remaining in untreated areas during multiple-session treatments from re-infecting the already treated areas, thus jeopardizing the treatment's success.

04

Follow-up examination and restoration

Two weeks after the gum treatment, the treatment success is evaluated, gum pocket depths are measured, and the restoration of lost teeth is prepared. This may involve the use of crowns, bridges, and dental implants. This is important for distributing chewing pressure evenly across multiple teeth and withstanding daily stresses. The treated teeth require careful maintenance, supported by regular professional dental hygiene sessions. Follow-up care and check-ups help in early detection of bacterial infection or damage and taking appropriate measures. This can lead to achieving beautiful and healthy teeth as well as improved quality of life in the long term. With the possibilities of modern dentistry, it is now possible to laugh, speak, and chew with complete comfort. We are happy to support you in this.
