Biological dentistry
Focal infections and their impact of local disease conditions on the overall organism
Focal infections and biological dentistry
In today's world, the body is exposed to a variety of influences, including microorganisms, environmental toxins, and other harmful agents. Biological dentistry addresses focal infections, focusing particularly on the effects of local disease conditions on the entire organism.
Causes
There are various sources for such focal infection conditions. Primarily, these include root canal-treated teeth, periodontal infections (periodontitis), or other chronic disease conditions in the dental, oral, and jaw area. However, metals and environmental toxins can also give rise to subsequent diseases elsewhere in the body.
These distant effects of such pathological processes involving the spread of germs or toxins are referred to as focal infections. From these chronic influences, serious illnesses can subsequently arise. For example, a disseminated infection can have its origin in the dental area, leading to conditions such as brain abscesses or endocarditis (inflammation of the inner lining of the heart). Scientific studies have identified typical oral inflammation pathogens (such as Streptococcus viridans...) and indicate hematogenous spread through the bloodstream (bacteremia).
These connections also apply to other diseases:
-
Vascular diseases (atherosclerotic infarctions, autoimmune diseases),
-
Skin diseases (alopecia areata, erythema nodosum, psoriasis vulgaris and atrophica, ...)
-
Infection of artificial endoprostheses (joint replacements) with serious infections due to bacterial contamination, especially Streptococci and Staphylococci.
-
Rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory tract infections
-
Toxic shock syndrome
-
Premature birth
In addition to infectious causes, exposure to toxins (such as amalgam, mercury) and foreign bodies (root canal filling materials) often play an important role.
The task of biological dentistry is to diagnose the comprehensive effects of harmful toxins and microbial burdens in a holistic approach, and then to treat them with appropriate therapies.
How can we help?
A precise search for foci and localization of the source of infection or possible foreign bodies is usually performed using modern imaging techniques (CBCT, CT) in our clinic. Patients often come to us for further evaluation, diagnosis, and dental/oral and maxillofacial surgical focus treatment after being referred by specialized physicians (general practitioners, cardiologists, complementary medicine practitioners). Typically, a detailed medical history discussion is followed by a comprehensive clinical examination of the teeth, mouth, jaw, and face. Subsequently, if necessary, we conduct further investigations (3D CT/CBCT, laboratory tests...).
Following this, there is a detailed discussion of the therapy plan, and in cases of focal infections, an explanation of therapeutic options and alternatives.
Whether it's a focal infection treatment involving the removal of root canal-treated teeth, the clearance of NICO lesions (chronically inflamed areas of the jaw bone), removal of amalgam fillings, or the elimination of foreign bodies from the jaws. We assist you using state-of-the-art treatment methods and necessary safety precautions (rubber dam isolation, antibiotic prophylaxis, 3D surgical planning, ...) for your prompt recovery.
